Crime is a major concern, but the stronger at-large message is not just “more police.” It’s faster response times, visible patrols, better communication with neighborhoods, violence prevention, and restoring trust between HPD and communities. Although citywide violent crime trends may be improving, but some neighborhoods, like the East Side, Sunnyside are still seeing serious spikes and frustration over lack of communication

Even though Houston is often called affordable compared with other big cities, residents are feeling pressure from housing costs, insurance, utilities, fees, wages, and everyday expenses. A University of Houston report found more than 75% of Houstonians worry wages are not keeping up with the cost of living.

This is a citywide issue that touches every council district. Houston residents deal with flooding, poor drainage, potholes, road repairs, and aging water/wastewater systems. The 2026 Kinder Houston Area Survey found more than 70% of residents are concerned about flooding, extreme heat, wind/hail damage, and freezes, which makes infrastructure and disaster readiness a strong issue across the city.
